The modern, low-scale, residential-in-nature architectural design of PCDS respects and is inspired by Camelback Mountain which overlooks the campus. The architectural style of the new Performing Arts Center encapsulates and interprets a modernized view of Camelback Mountain in the distance. Use of proportion, textures, and a carefully selected palette of materials and colors, present a design that is comprehensive and cohesive with nature while echoing the feel of the existing campus on the North, East and South facades of the building. On the West facade, a sloped roof runs the entire length of the entry lobby area of the proposed Performing Arts Center, mimicking the slope on the existing Welcome Center. Incorporated into this element, a modern version of a “brise soleil” was added to cast undulating and non-static shadows onto the lobby floor during late afternoon, while also protecting the glazing system.
